At Raising Up Hope for Uganda (RUHU), the Social Work Department plays a vital role in caring for and protecting the children entrusted to RUHU. Their work goes far beyond day-to-day support. It is about building hope, restoring families, and creating brighter futures.
Here are just some of the ways the dedicated RUHU social workers serve the children and families in their care:
- Child Protection & Care: Identifying and admitting children into RUHU programs, monitoring their welfare, and ensuring they receive medical care, counseling, and educational support.
- Family Tracing & Reunification: Actively seeking relatives of children, making arrangements for safe reunification, and following up with resettled children to ensure stability and well-being.
- Community Outreach: Conducting slum outreaches, offering health education on HIV/AIDS and other vital issues, and connecting children and families with the resources they need.
- Guidance & Counseling: Supporting children and families through challenges such as poverty, unemployment, substance abuse, and trauma. This includes individual and group counseling, as well as working with schools to address and arrange needed services for children with behavioral, academic, or mental health concerns.
- Advocacy & Legal Support: Serving as liaisons with homes, schools, courts, clinics, and protective services to assist children who face issues such as disabilities, abuse, or poverty; addressing legal issues like child abuse, custody, and discipline; and advocating for children’s needs.

From health talks in the community to counseling children through trauma to walking alongside families during reunification, their work is life-changing. Every day, this team is on the ground walking alongside children who have experienced loss, trauma, and hardship; helping them find stability, healing, and hope.
