Relief – COVID-19

Friends and Supporters of Raising Up Hope in Uganda,

We wanted to send you a brief update on the impact of the coronavirus in Uganda and on RUHU in particular.

Uganda, like most countries has issued fairly stringent shelter-in-place restrictions. An evening curfew and the suspension of all public forms of transportations are particularly impactful for the life of RUHU. Many of RUHU’s programs have been suspended as a result.

One of the largest impacts on RUHU is that a majority of the children have had to leave the Boys and Girls homes to stay with members of the community. Only 15 children are allowed to stay at an orphanage home. RUHU’s social workers have placed the other 66 children in homes.

We are thankful for good relationships with RUHU’s neighbors who have opened their homes to these children. However, RUHU is helping to cover food costs in each of these placements. In addition to the extra costs of not having all of the kids in two houses, there is the additional cost of food prices increasing across the country.

We are therefore trying to raise additional funding to support the community members who are helping care for RUHU kids during this time. Because we don’t know how long the sanctions will be in place, we don’t know exactly how much money will be needed. We are aiming to raise $10,000 through this Covid-19 Relief Fundraiser. We anticipate this being enough to get RUHU through the month of April. We will keep you all informed.
