I was in my sister’s basement in Ohio in 2011. I was on the phone with Sonja. We had to pick a name for our new organization. We had talked through a dozen ideas. It was difficult to identify something that captured the heart of what we were trying to do in Uganda without sounding exactly like every other non-profit. I forget who said it first, but when we said the name Beautiful Response for the first time, it felt right.
What is a Beautiful Response?
It’s doing something productive with that deep stirring you feel when you encounter an injustice in the world.
It’s choosing to act, to give, to commit, to invest…when it would be easier to move on and forget.
It’s seeing a need in front of you and saying, “yes” instead of finding another excuse in your pockets.
It’s running for 67 DAYS! And choosing to use your skills as a painter to elevate the story of someone on the other side of the world. That is exactly what Pip Hanbury is doing. She joined Sonja and I along with her family on a trip to Uganda in January. She met kids whose stories stirred something in her. And she chose to respond beautifully to that stirring.
So, Pip is painting a portrait of one of the girls, and she is running for 67 days to raise money to help pay for university tuition. Pip’s effort is a great reminder that we all have gifts that can change someone else’s world. Whatever gifts you have can be used to meet the world’s deep needs.
