RUHU SOCIAL WORK DEPARTMENT

“The social work department has been able to handle a number of issues concerning the welfare of children and employees at RUHU in the month of August. Below is what has transpired in the department.
Slum Outreaches: We have been able to conduct slum outreaches in Kisenyi for this month, and they have been going on well. Some of the activities were hair cutting, the feeding program, a medical outreach program, and counseling and guidance sessions for the children. We have also been able to receive 3 new children from the slums of Kisenyi. They have been placed at the boys’ home under the care of the warden.
Meeting with Children: We had a meeting to introduce and emphasize new policies in homes, for things like theft, discipline, and respecting elders. Undisciplined children will be forwarded to the disciplinary committee. We were able to read the rules and regulations governing both homes and their penalties. We also emphasized the issue of smartness while reporting back to school.
National Identification Registration: We were able to work with NIRA to make sure that all students and staff registered or renewed their national identity cards. The exercise was very successful, and we are so grateful for the opportunity that was given to us all.
Reunification Home Visits: We were able to visit two families on the 16th. The families were excited to see their children. S’s father said he had opened up a police case for his missing son. We also met P’s grandmother, who was excited to see him. They all agreed and signed our documents.
Communication with Community Parents: We have been able to communicate with parents who took their children for the holiday. We follow up on those who have gone home to check on whether they reached home safely and how they are doing while there. We have been able to find out the status of some parents, where the parent of M got into an accident, and he can no longer walk. Also, H’s mother has a swollen leg and cannot walk. We plan to make visits to check on them.
File Updating: We have been able to update the children’s files and organise them well.
Signing of Policies: The employees have all signed the revised copy of the child protection policy, as well as the safeguarding policy for RUHU.
Health of Children in the Homes: The children who have fallen sick have been forwarded to the RUHU nurse, and she has been able to treat them while referring some cases to Rubaga to be handled there.
Rachael, who had gone on maternity leave, has been able to come back this month on the 11th, and she has resumed work in the social work department.
The swearing-in ceremony party took place at RUHU Primary, where our own children I, J, M, H, and W were sworn in as new elected prefects to serve the school. This makes us happy to see a big change in their lives since many of them were from Bwaise slum and now are taking on leadership positions in their school.”

“The achievements obtained in the month of August are as follows:
This month, we managed to harvest 82kgs of sweet pepper. This was delivered to Nakaseero market for sale.
On leafy vegetables, we have managed to supply the following to schools and homes:
– Sukuma 400kgs
– Spinach 380kgs
– Broccoli 100kgs
– Cabbages 200kgs
Our planted maize has reached the stage of harvesting, so by next week, we are going to start harvesting and sun drying as well.
Still in this month of August, we have opened part of the 1-acre irrigation system to plant passion fruits. We will be supplying this in the homes and selling the surplus to the market. But also, it will change the beauty of the farm.
We managed to transplant the sweet potato leaves, and we believe that with the rains starting in September, they will grow faster.
Mr. Lumunye Honey is doing a good job at RUHU Secondary. Besides teaching theory, he has also engaged the students in designing the micro gardens [mandala garden and the raised beds]. He has done this with a class of senior students. They participated in setting the gardens and also transplanting the seedlings. He also taught them the management practices that involve pest and disease control, mulching practices, and why and when we do them.
The pigs on the farm are doing well. We managed to slaughter 6 pigs and managed to get 180kgs of pork out of them. We also transferred 9 piglets from VOH to the Thomas Robert Lochner farm to replace the slaughtered ones. We have 3 sows at VOH, and one gave birth to 5 piglets. They are doing so well.
After harvesting the maize, we are going to dry the harvest and also prepare for the next season of maize, which is starting very soon. We are also going to put more effort into the passion fruit as another way of collecting revenue for the farm, and also supplying the homes. We are also going to grow more cabbage for both sale[80%] and the remaining percentage for consumption.”

We express gratitude to the dedicated individuals who work with us. The combined efforts, passion, and dedication of the team members are invaluable, and this strengthens the bond between us and enhances teamwork. We thank God for the dedicated staff, who have managed to improve service delivery in the organization.
We thank God for the board of directors of the organization that have really led us and guided us through strategic decisions and directions. This month, our semi-annual board meeting was held, and came up with many resolutions for decision-making in the organization. We thank God.
We thank God for the Thomas Robert Lochner farm. This has started supplying vegetables in the children’s homes and more, which has boosted balanced diets in the organization.The completion of staff appraisals and semi-annual staff meeting, where best performers were rewarded and those not performing well were given improvement areas. It’s a sure sign of growth for the organization.
Finally, the second term of the school year has come to an end, and this was a great testimony to see our kids attending school once again. We thank God for all sponsors of Beautiful Response and GDG in Australia.”
PRAYER – We ask for prayers for…
“We pray that funds for Term 3 be available so that kids will attend school without delay. We pray that funds are available because we shall be starting Term 3 on the 15th of September 2025, and this is the last term of the year.
We seek God’s favor for RUHU’s mission and goals to be achieved.
We pray for the programs to be impactful and to bring about lasting change.
We pray and seek God’s provision for the RUHU’s financial needs.
We pray for wisdom and unity for the team and leadership.
We pray for resilience, perseverance, and strength to overcome challenges and continue working towards RUHU’s vision.
We pray for protection and seek divine protection for all involved in RUHU.
We pray for divine wisdom and guidance and ask for God’s guidance on decisions and direction.
We continue praying that God provides funds for the start of the vocational institute to enable senior six vacists to have a chance to acquire skills for businesses. Many of our kids who have sat senior six are still home without hope of going to university or institute.”
