Education has always been at the heart of RUHU’s mission, and over the past few years, we’ve learned valuable lessons about what it takes for our students to thrive after graduation. We’ve seen that while academic learning is important, it must be paired with practical, hands-on skills to ensure employment and long-term sustainability. That’s why RUHU is investing deeply in vocational training. This year, we’ve seen incredible growth across every level of learning — from our youngest students in Primary School to our young mothers at House of Hope — as each program equips students with practical, marketable skills for real-world opportunity.
Here’s a look at what’s happening:
Primary Education – At RUHU’s Primary School, students are learning the basics — not just in English, Math, and Science — but also in vocational skills like soap-making, bookmaking, and sewing. These hands-on lessons give even our youngest learners confidence and creativity, preparing them for what’s ahead. Cost of Program/Term = $735
Secondary Education – As students progress, their education expands to include specialized training in agriculture, welding, cosmetology, and tailoring. These skills are practical, marketable, and open real pathways to employment and independence. Often at this point, students are able to gain real-life experience, especially in the welding field! Cost of Program/Term = $1,470
Agriculture Program – Supervised by Nicholas, RUHU’s Farm Project Manager, and taught by RUHU graduate Honey, our Agriculture Program blends classroom lessons with hands-on fieldwork on both the Secondary School campus and the new Thomas Robert Lochner farm. Students learn which crops thrive in different seasons and how to plant and care for them. This practical experience helps students see firsthand how education can grow into real-world opportunity. Cost of Program/Term = $720
Muwala Mulungi – Meaning “Beautiful Girl”, Muwala Mulungi is RUHU’s women’s empowerment program in the slums. Through it, girls and women learn entrepreneurial skills like catering, hairdressing, and soap-making while also receiving counseling and emotional support. The goal is financial autonomy, confidence, and holistic growth. Cost of Program/Month = $735
Gifted Hands Project – At House of Hope, our home for young mothers and their children, the Gifted Hands Program provides hands-on training in tailoring, jewelry-making, and financial literacy. These women are gaining the tools to create stability and opportunity for their families — one stitch, one class, and one dream at a time. Cost of Program/Month = $295
RUHU Vocational Institute – And now, we’re taking the next big step: the launch of the RUHU Vocational Institute! This new institute will allow students to go deeper in their chosen trades through 90% hands-on learning in Welding, Cosmetology & Hair Dressing, Computer Maintenance & Repair, and Fashion & Design. It’s a revolutionary model designed to bridge the gap between education and employment, with a heavy focus on skills acquisition versus theory. Each of these programs represents a piece of RUHU’s bigger vision: empowering children, youth, and women to thrive through education and opportunity.
YOU make this possible! Your continued support ensures that every student can learn, grow, and dream bigger than ever before.
